Ålesund: Island charm - scenic ride with culinary tasting at Alnes Brygge
The municipality of Giske comprises four islands: Giske, Godøy, Vigra, and Valderøy. These islands were once the center of power during the Viking Age and Middle Ages, home to earls, local kings, and Viking chieftains. On this journey, we will cross a series of tunnels and bridges to explore two of the most significant islands: Giske and Godøy.
Our adventure begins with a drive from Ålesund, crossing the Giske Bridge to the saga island of Giske, the birthplace of the Viking chieftain Rollo. The island, which lends its name to the municipality, holds great historical importance. Giske is flat and fertile, with settlements dating back to the early Bronze Age. A photo stop will allow you to take in the stunning panoramic views of the island.
Next, we travel through a tunnel to reach the island of Godøy, home to the charming fishing village of Alnes. At Alnes Brygge, we offer a food tasting that gives you an authentic experience of Norwegian food culture. The focus will be on shellfish, fish, smoked meats and cheeses. The lovely team at Alnes Brygge will also provide an engaging experience by talking about the dishes served and answering questions. For example, they will share insights into the processing of clipfish, where one of Alnes Brygge's employees has significant experience from clipfish production.
After our visit to Alnes, we return to Ålesund and ascend the local mountain, Aksla. The bus will take us as far as the stadium, where we’ll continue our journey on foot. A scenic 900-meter walk on a gentle path with no gradient will lead us to the viewpoint, offering spectacular panoramic views of Ålesund and its stunning surroundings. From the viewpoint, we will descend 418 steps back to the town, where it's just a short walk to the harbor.
Please Note: For those who prefer not to walk to the viewpoint or down the steps, the bus will return directly to the harbor.
